DIY Under Staircase Makeover: Closet to Pantry

During our kitchen renovation (see blog post here), we decided to move the pantry out of the kitchen. Instead, we turned our coat closet under the staircase into a functional and organized pantry. It’s in the hallway right behind the kitchen wall so the location is not too far from the kitchen. I don’t like clutter at all, which also means clutter on the countertops. To avoid that, I decided to have big storage baskets to include all my electronic gadgets like the juicer, processor, blender and so on. I take them out as needed and put them right back.

We began the process by removing the one wire shelf that was in there. After that, we painted the walls (baseboards and flooring were changed months later). My lovely husband went to the hardware store and picked up all the lumbers. He measured and cut while I sanded. We installed all the shelves with L brackets in a U shape. After going back and forth on the depth of each layer and how many layers to have we decided to have 3 layers, and the bottom layer to be the deepest.

I can’t say enough how happy I am with our decision in every aspect. It turned out very functional and the kids have all their favorite snacks accessible at their height. I have all the glass containers on the top shelf and their snacks in wooden or plastic baskets. Here are some of the same products I have. The metal clamp glass jars are by Bormioli Rocco Fido Glass Jars and they were collected at TJ Maxx and Home Goods.

Measurements:

  • The pantry measures 57” x 37”

  • The depth of the side shelves are 8 inches. For the shelves straight ahead, the first two rows are 12 inches and the last row measures 16 inches.

  • The vertical spacing (height) between the first and second shelves are 12 inches and second and third shelves are 16 inches.

  • We used L 5" x H 4" on the side shelves (shop here), L 8" x H 6" on the top two back shelves (shop here) and L 12" x H 8" on the back bottom shelf (shop here). Two brackets for each shelf is sufficient.
