Oh Baby! Safe Bath & Skincare Favorites
For the last 3 years or so I've been a health nut. First, it started out with the foods my family ate and the produce we purchased. As much as I could, I began purchasing locally grown and organic foods. My husband and I even started growing fruits and veggies in our yard. If you came to my house today, you won't find any foods with artificial flavoring, chemicals, preservatives or GMO ingredients. So, my awareness for clean and organic foods lead me to question and research every other product that was in our daily lives. Everything from hair products to laundry detergents and household supplies have been altered to products with natural ingredients as much as possible. That even includes all baby products. When my son was born 4 years ago, I was not completely transformed to all natural products. I had not done thorough research on everything I had hoped for. However, when I was pregnant recently with my daughter I was more aware and had researched every single product in my household, from beauty products to cleaning supplies.
So, with this post I'll start this series with baby toiletries that I have been using the last 2 months after many hours of research for safe and most natural products on the market. Reading the ingredients and understanding which ones to stay away from is key. A product can say "organic" on the packaging but what does that really mean? Does that mean it's all natural? Not necessarily. A product can state organic on the packaging and still have toxins and preservatives listed in the ingredients. Majority of people don't take the time to read the ingredients before buying a product. So, I'm here to tell you that I've done the research for you and have listed my favorite non-toxic, paraben-free, chemical-free, and safe products for baby skincare and bath time.
I couldn't have done my research without the help of two amazing sources: EWG & Gimme The Good Stuff. Check them out yourself. Check your currently used products against EWG's directory to see the ratings. This post is based solely on my opinion and experience with these products.
BABY SHAMPOO
Currently, I am using the California Baby Calming Shampoo and Bodywash. I love this product so much. This brand makes a safe line of baby shampoo/body wash that is available in tons of stores. The shampoo and bodywash is GMO-Free, Triclosan-Free, SLS-Free and sulfate-free. It is tear-free, allergy-tested formula created with naturally-derived cleansing ingredients, like wild harvested yucca and organic soapbark. The fragrance in this is not synthetic, and the natural essential oils leave a subtle, fresh out of the tub smell that I love.
BABY LOTION
California Baby wins in the lotion department as well. After bath, I massage the baby with the California Baby Calming Lotion to help calm & relax. It is non-greasy and absorbs quickly without leaving any oily residue. I love the calming scent of organic calendula extract and French lavender - perfect for bed or nap-time massage lotion.
BABY WIPES
The Water Wipes are known as “the world’s purest wipe,” and that stands true since they contain nothing but water and grapefruit seed extract. Unlike conventional baby wipes that use chemicals based ingredients, the Water Wipes are free of alcohol, perfume, chlorine, formaldehyde, parabens, phenols, phthalates, quaternary ammonium compounds, sls/sles, lanolin and unnecessary additives.
DIAPER CREAM
I am so happy with this diaper cream by Badger that I purchased from Amazon. It is naturally derived and very effective. Calendula extract as the main ingredient is rich in antioxidants and vitamins and has a calming effect on babies sensitive skin. It has shown great results with my newborn's diaper rash without causing any negative reaction. It's a little thick when applying, so a little bit goes a long way. I highly recommend this product.
And, how adorable is this cardigan onesie that my daughter is rocking? Shannon, the owner of Izzy and Isla, makes these cute cardigan onesies that are the perfect gift for any expecting mom, baby shower, and welcome home outfit. There are so many options to choose from - plain, polka dots, stripes, long sleeve, short sleeve and so many more. The boys collection are as adorable with bow ties that are sewn onto the onesies. Perfect for special occasions. It's like having accessories and wardrobe in one. They are made of great durable quality and superb craftsmanship.
I'd love to hear what your favorite natural baby products are in the comments below.
